marketing for introverted people

How to get premium web design clients (even if you’re an introvert)

Do you worry that you're too introverted to get premium web design clients?

Do you dread the thought of marketing yourself?

Do you feel like you have to be on Facebook live or post on social media or build an audience, or do Instagram Reels, or post on Instagram, or document your life, or show up on social media every day to market your web design business?

And those thoughts make you just wanna just be like, “Nope, nevermind. I'll just stay at this day job that I hate. It's not worth it”.

If that sounds like you, well, I made this video and wrote this blog post just for you!

So many of us want to build websites for a living because we love building websites. We get to hide behind our laptop, we get to be by ourselves. We get to be creative, and we get to work solo. We get to do our thing, by ourselves.

In the beginning of my web design business, I did everything by myself.  I was like, “I blaze my own trail, get out of my way. I don't need help.  I got this. I can do it all on my own”.

Up until recently that was just how I was! And a lot of web designers are like that too. We wanna figure everything out on our own. We're introverts. We don't really want to ask for help. We’re afraid to really put ourselves out there and OWN our incredible skill and talent.

The only problem is… going it alone is the loooooong way to go. It makes the journey to a full-time income take so much longer.

When you don't put yourself in a community of people who are just like you and want nothing more than to help you and want to see you succeed, you're taking the long way!

So as web designers, when we’re being loners and we're doing our thing and figuring everything out on our own, it’s a TON of pressure that we put on ourselves, and so we have this tendency to just retreat and hide and not market ourselves or ask for help or be a part of a group of people who really want to see us succeed.

One way that you can let being introverted get in the way of creating a full-time income in your web design business when you're not willing to let people help you!

But I can promise you that you are not too introverted to market your web design business, because all the things that you probably think you gotta do to market it are NOT things that you actually have to do.

So many people say to me, “Do I have to be on social media to market my web design business? Do I have to be on Facebook? I hate Facebook. I don't want to be on Facebook. Do I have to build an Instagram following?

If you like creating content for Instagram, if you like being on Facebook, that’s great, go do it! It’s not like it won’t help you, but it’s not the end-all be-all and there are way faster, less time-intensive ways to get clients!

I marketed and built my business for six years without relying on social media. I do use social media, but in a really strategic way.

I don’t use it to build an audience so that I can entertain people. I use it to connect with people who serve the audience that I already serve, or connect directly with potential clients.

So, if you're introverted and you don’t want to put myself out there on social media, the good news is that you don't have to do any of that stuff to get clients. All you have to do is be a real person and be helpful and figure out who it is that you want to help, how you want to help them, go talk to them, listen to their problems, and explain to them how you can actually help them. And then say, “I would love to help you if that is something that you would like help with”.  Just put it out there! And that's literally all you have to do.

If you’re introverted, even doing something that simple can be totally nerve-wracking, and that’s why we actually have a whole entire system that we teach inside of our Web Designer Academy where we give you the exact words to say in every single marketing and client situation.

And I created those scripts to tell you exactly what to say in every situation with your web design clients especially for all my introverts out there – because I’m YOU.

After my freshman year of college, I worked at a law firm for a summer as the receptionist… and I was the worst receptionist in the whole wide world! I was afraid to talk on the phone!! I was so shy and so introverted. I mean, I wouldn't even call to order pizza because I didn’t know what they're going to say. I’d think things like “What if they ask me something that I don't know how to answer? What if I don't know what they're going to ask me? I don't know how to use this phone system, what if I hang up on someone?”I had such bad anxiety every time the phone rang, and probably the only reason I didn’t get fired is that my mom worked there too.

I understand the anxiety that we feel when we are not in control of situations as introverts. That’s why everything that I do inside the Web Designer Academy is designed to tell you the exact words to say in this situation!

If you've literally ever wished someone would just tell you the exact words to say to talk to a potential client…

Do you wish someone would tell you the exact words to say on a consultation call, the exact words to say when it's time to ask if they want to work together, the exact words to say when they say they can’t afford it or they won’t get you their content on time or they want you to start over and change the whole thing?

Because back in my early days as a web designer… I wish someone would just have just told me exactly what to say in all of those uncomfortable situations because I'm an introvert! I’m a control-freak! I like to know what's going to happen. I like to have five different scenarios so that if they say this, then I say that. I like to know that up front before I go into any conversation!

If you are someone who is introverted, who's afraid to put themselves out there, who doesn't want to be super visible on social media but who still wants to build a web design business, and be able to do the thing that you love, and feel really comfortable talking to clients or talking to potential clients about how you can help them, then we are made for each other!

YOU are who I made our Web Designer Academy for!

If that sounds like something that you are interested in, you can go to http://webdesigneracademy.com, fill out a quick two-question application to apply to work with us.

If we think we can help you, if we think you're a good fit for the program, we'll let you know.  If we don't think you're a good fit for the program, we will let you know. And if you're not a good fit right now, but you want to become a good fit, we will let you know some of the things that you could do to prepare and get to the point where you are a good fit!

What I see happen with so many introverted, extremely talented web designers is that they hold themselves back from not only marketing, because they think that they have to do things to market their business that they don't really have to do, but they hold themselves back from community.

They hold themselves back from getting help. They hold themselves back from being a part of a group of people who really, really, really want to see them win.

We have live strategy calls every week where I ask our students to share their wins, and I literally have to pull it out of them because they don’t wanna share because they feel like they're bragging and that feels uncomfortable to them! They’re so used to going it alone and not at all used to being in a group and letting people support them, or being able to say something really amazing that they did that they're super proud of and not have people be jealous or want to tear them down.

That's the kind of community that we've created inside of our Web Designer Academy.

And if you wanna listen in on one of our live strategy calls, check out this episode of our Pep Talks for Side Hustlers podcast!

One of our recent calls, one of our clients shared that they got two new clients last week.  Someone else shared that she got hired by an agency to do white label work for their clients. Another student booked a new consultation.

Another student had someone cancel on a consultation, and then we told her exactly what to say to get them to reschedule. And then she had the consultation and they were wanting to book with her, but they had some questions. So we told her exactly what to say in that situation to help move those conversations along.

We are so serious about supporting all of the introverts of the world who are just like, “I don't know what to do next. Here's what happened. Can you help me?

And we take your hand, and we walk you through it every step of the way so that you are always supported and you're never going it alone.

And you are never at a loss for words, because we literally give you all the words.

So I invite you to go to http://webdesigneracademy.com and fill out a quick two-question, zero-obligation application.

Especially if you're an introvert and you have been going it alone and you have been struggling to market yourself and you want to be part of a supportive community of web designers who want nothing more than to see you win and who will not let you get away with not sharing all the amazing things that you're doing and the actions that you're taking to grow your business.

We want to celebrate you. We want to support you. We want to help you create the full-time income you’ve been dreaming of!

And if you've been undercharging, if you've been over-delivering, or you think your clients can't afford more so you won't raise your prices, we have a free pricing workshop that you can sign up for and watch right now.

It’s a totally free training where we dive a little bit deeper into some of the places where people's web design businesses break down and what to do instead!

After watching you'll:

  • Know exactly how much you need to charge to make a full-time living as a web designer.
  • Understand how to apply the Rule of 10 to figure out the true value of a website to your clients.
  • Have an upgraded belief system around all the reasons you think you can’t charge that much, you know… things like “I need more experience… I'm self-taught… my clients can't afford to pay more…”
  • Be aware of the 3 most common places web design businesses break down and leak time and money (and what to do to prevent or fix it).

It's going to break down all of the messed up mindset stuff that we as web designers have about our value and what we're worth, and it's gonna take that and turn it on its head with the goal being that by the time you leave that workshop, you're convinced to raise your prices. You will believe that you can. And you will literally go to your website and just change the numbers and be ready to start charging more.

I am obsessed with helping web designers create profitable, sustainable, scalable web design businesses. I'm obsessed with helping make sure that you are charging sustainably in your business and that you have all of the support that you need to grow whatever kind of web design business that you want, whether you want it to be a really lucrative side hustle or you want it to be your full-time gig. And we are here to support you no matter what!
