If you’ve ever thought that you can't raise your prices for web design because you think your clients can't afford it and that if you raise your prices, you won’t have any clients, you won’t make any money, you’ll never be able to make a full-time income from your web design business and be a successful web designer…
I made this video and wrote this blog post for YOU because undercharging actually hurts your clients! Watch or read on to find out how!
I teach web designers how to create profitable, sustainable, and scalable web design businesses, and I'm obsessed with making sure that you are making a full-time income from your web design business (or at least making what you want to be making as a web designer, whether that's a full-time income to replace your day job or whatever your goal is).
When you price your services based on your perceived value of yourself and your skills, which we as web designers (especially those of us who are self-taught) constantly undervalue…
…when you underestimate what people are willing to pay for your services when you’re constantly looking around at what everybody else is doing instead of what you want your business to look like, what you want your lifestyle to be, and the kind of clients that YOU want to want to work with…
…when you price your services based on what you are willing to pay for in your own business based on your own busted money mindset when you’re always trying to do everything by yourself, for free and you're never willing to invest in your own business…
You automatically assume that everybody else is like that too! You assume that everyone else is scared to invest and cared to spend money on things.
And when you are pricing based on your own broken money mindset, which is what I totally used to do, then you truly do believe that other people can't afford your services and therefore you cannot raise your prices.
When you are undercharging, you are not able to buy the tools that you need in your business to run an amazing business.
You're not able to invest in your own support and mentorship and community that you need to become a better business owner.
You have to book way too many clients to make your business sustainable, so you're not able to give your clients the attention that they really truly need and deserve for their businesses to be successful. You are not able to be the collaborative partner that they need to grow their business.
When someone is building a business online, they need their tech to work so they can scale and transcend that time for money barrier that websites create for people!
When you think you can't raise your prices because clients can't afford it, that's coming through your own lens of what you think you can and can't afford.
There absolutely are people out there that just simply won't pay for anything, and there are also people out there who would be happy to pay you if they truly could afford it but they literally do not have the money, and if you raise your prices, yes, those people won't be able to do business with you – and they get to hire someone else or do it themselves.
But the other side of the coin is that there are clients who are more than willing to pay you for the excellent service that you'll be able to provide to them when you are charging at a price that makes it so that you can give them that VIP level of service that they need in order to create amazing results in their own businesses.
There are people out there who are willing to invest in their business and are also in a position to invest in their business.
There are people out there who want to build a relationship with someone for the long term and are willing to pay well for the right person.
The value that you bring to the table is far beyond pointing and clicking your way through building a website!
As web designers, sometimes we think, “It's so easy to build a website. I can’t charge more for this. People can't afford it, and I have to be affordable to everyone.”
But there are so many resources out there for people who can’t or don’t want to hire a web designer for them to do it themselves.
There are other people out there who don’t want to do it themselves, even if they could, and want to hire someone to do it for them!
And they don't deserve to work with a web designer who’s so burnt out because they’re undercharging and don’t know how to run their business that the project drags on forever and then they quit their whole web design business because it’s not sustainable and that client has to start over with a new web designer.
I can’t even tell you how many clients came to me in that exact same situation!
When you're undercharging, you not only hurt your own business but also your clients don't get the best service that they could possibly get from you when you're juggling 15 different projects and you're burnt out and resentful and frustrated.
I'm speaking from experience because that was me back in the day when I was undercharging. I was just like, “This isn't worth it. I don't want to bring up this other solution because you know, that's going to take too long and I don't have enough time to do that within what we're doing and I’m not getting paid nearly enough!”
Undercharging hurts your clients because it hurts you, and you can't show up as your best self!
And you're also not giving your clients a chance to invest in their own business at a level, that's really going to help them move their business to the next level.
So stop “pricing with your own pocketbook” as the money-mindset experts say, and start pricing based on the long-term value that having the website delivers for your clients and be willing to let the clients who truly are not willing to pay you what you need to make a full-time income!
Let the clients that you’ve been undercharging know that you’re raising your prices, and give them a choice to continue with you or find someone else that meets their budget.
Every single one of my Web Designer Academy students who has gone through this transformation of being really scared to raise their prices because they've been able to get a few clients at those low prices and they believe if they raise their prices that no one will hire them – it turns out to not be the case for them at all! They find that their existing clients are actually willing to pay higher prices for a higher level of service and a higher level of collaboration and, and a higher level of a partnership in building a long-term relationship with, with someone who can help them as their business grows – and they find new clients too!
It is my mission to help you stop undercharging, stop over-delivering and create a sustainable business – because then you can have a bigger impact not only in your own business, but your clients are able to run their business better and they are able to have a bigger impact in their world.
There’s a ripple effect that happens and it starts with YOU pricing sustainably in YOUR business.
So if you struggle with undercharging and overdelivering, if you struggle with valuing what you bring to the table, if you have pricing mindset issues, we have a free pricing workshop that you can sign up for and watch right now.
It’s a totally free training where we dive a little bit deeper into some of the places where people's web design businesses break down and what to do instead!
After watching you'll:
- Know exactly how much you need to charge to make a full-time living as a web designer.
- Understand how to apply the Rule of 10 to figure out the true value of a website to your clients.
- Have an upgraded belief system around all the reasons you think you can’t charge that much, you know… things like “I need more experience… I'm self-taught… my clients can't afford to pay more…”
- Be aware of the 3 most common places web design businesses break down and leak time and money (and what to do to prevent or fix it).
We're going to help you figure out what sustainable pricing looks like for you specifically, how you switch your mindset from how you've been doing things to charging sustainably, and how to actually figure out the long-term value of a website to your client.
We're going to give you formulas for all of that. And by the end of that training, you're going to feel super confident about raising your prices and have a plan to do it.
We are so, so passionate about making sure that web designers stop starting new web design businesses and then bailing out in the first year because they didn't understand how to run the business side of their business. And if they just knew a few key things, they could have created a profitable, sustainable, successful web design business and made all of their dreams come true.
That’s why we're obsessed with helping our clients navigate those early stages of business, get through the hard parts and get to the point where things are actually working and working the way that they want them to work.
And if you are not convinced that you can raise your prices and still make money, leave me a comment. Let me know what you're thinking. What's holding you back? Why haven't you done it yet? I would love to know!
